The Key West Lighthouse & Keeper's Quarters

The climb begins at the base of the tapered white brick tower through a heavy arched entryway. As you wind upward around the central column, narrow slit windows puncture the thick masonry walls, framing teasing views of swaying palm fronds and historic tin roofs below.

The cast-iron spiral staircase consists of 88 steps with solid iron risers and a secure exterior handrail. A final short 7-step iron ladder leads up through the hatchway onto the outdoor iron catwalk surrounding the lantern room. From here, standing 86 feet above the island, you can see clear across Key West from the Gulf of Mexico on the north to the Atlantic Ocean on the south. Looking straight down into the neighboring Hemingway estate, you get an aerial perspective of Hemingway's swimming pool, lush gardens, and second-story writing studio.

The Key West Lighthouse holds a rare distinction in American maritime history: it was maintained by female keepers during an era when few women held official government positions. In 1848, following the death of the original keeper, his wife Barbara Mabrity was appointed head keeper, faithfully tending the oil lamps for 32 years through violent hurricanes, yellow fever epidemics, and the American Civil War.

In 1908, after keeper William Betchel drowned at sea, his wife Mary took over the post. Inside the restored 1887 Keeper's Quarters house at the base of the tower, museum exhibits display vintage Fresnel lenses, keeper logs, uniform artifacts, and historic photographs chronicling the daily routines of keeping the flame burning through ferocious Atlantic squalls.

Because the lantern room catwalk has limited square footage, the staff restricts tower access to approximately 15 people at a time. On peak cruise ship days between 11:30 AM and 2:00 PM, a brief 10-minute wait can develop at the base of the stairs.

To ensure comfortable climbing temperatures, visit right at 10:00 AM or in the late afternoon after 3:30 PM. The morning sun illuminates the western side of the tower, providing ideal front-facing lighting for photos from Whitehead Street. At the top, bring a wrist strap for your phone or camera: ocean breezes on the open catwalk can be brisk.
