Bahia Honda State Park: The Florida Keys' Finest Beach

Bahia Honda features two distinct beach areas with completely different views and conditions:

• Sandspur Beach (Atlantic side): Stretches for over a mile along the southeast shore of the island. The offshore waters are remarkably shallow, warm, and crystal clear, with powdery sand extending hundreds of feet into the ocean. Perfect for families, beachcombing for sea beans and conch shells, and paddleboarding.
• Calusa Beach (Gulf / Northwest side): A smaller crescent-shaped beach situated immediately adjacent to the marina basin. Its defining feature is the backdrop: it sits directly beneath the towering spans of the historic Bahia Honda Railroad Bridge. Calusa has calmer waters protected from Atlantic swells and provides the most dramatic photography angle in the park.

Constructed between 1905 and 1912 under the direction of standard oil tycoon Henry Flagler, the Bahia Honda Bridge was considered the greatest engineering challenge of the entire Florida East Coast Railway Key West Extension. The deep natural ocean channel between Bahia Honda Key and Spanish Harbor Key dropped over 35 feet deep with fierce tidal currents, requiring massive steel Pratt truss spans anchored into underwater concrete caissons.

When the devastating 1935 Labor Day Hurricane destroyed the railroad tracks, the State of Florida purchased the right-of-way and paved a two-lane highway directly on top of the original steel railroad trusses. Drivers crossing the bridge literally drove on an elevated road perched atop the truss structure! In 1972, a modern four-lane highway bridge was constructed parallel to the old bridge, and two sections of the historic bridge were removed to allow commercial boat passage. Today, visitors can walk up a paved 0.4-mile trail to the severed edge of the upper roadway for spectacular views of stingrays and sea turtles swimming in the channel below.

Bahia Honda operates an on-site dive concession that runs daily snorkel trips out to Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary, located roughly 6 miles offshore. Looe Key is a classic spur-and-groove coral reef formation where massive elkhorn and brain coral ridges rise from 30 feet of water to within 4 feet of the surface.

Because Looe Key sits further offshore in deeper, oceanic water than Key West's nearshore shallow reefs, water visibility frequently exceeds 60 to 80 feet, and encounters with large pelagic marine life—including spotted eagle rays, reef sharks, goliath groupers, and sea turtles—are common. Snorkel trips depart twice daily (typically 9:30 AM and 1:30 PM) and last 1.5 hours on the reef.
